SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Special Education Program is committed to
promoting the holistic development of each student,
through integration and inclusive curriculum. While
Toogoolawah State High School recognises that all
students are individuals with unique learning styles,
some students have needs which are so different that
their school program may require considerations,
resources and teaching activities very different to the
general class or school routine.
Students enrolled in the Special Education Program
have verified disabilities such Autistic Spectrum
Disorder or other impairments (intellectual,
speech-language, visual, physical or hearing). Depending
on their abilities and needs, these students may work in
general classes with adjustments and supports, or may
work on a fully alternate program. Their program is
managed via the Individual Education Plan process.
Parents, teachers, specialist support staff, therapists
and other professionals work as a team. Individual
programs centre around a variety of activities including
life skills , functional academics, social skill
development, work experience, leisure and vocational
skills, direct care, running small businesses to the
provision of therapy programs. Our central focus in
service delivery is the promotion of independence
to allow each student to reach his or her maximum
potential.
Students seeking credit through QSA subjects must
meet the standard requirements for award of levels of
achievement. Special consideration provisions in accord
with QSA policy can be engaged in these circumstances.
Students who do not qualify for a Queensland Certificate
of Education (QCE) may be eligible for a Queensland
Certificate of Individual Attainment (QCIA)
The only true disability in life is
a bad attitude
LEARNING SUPPORT
Learning Support Teachers and Teachers Aides provide
assistance for students experiencing significant
difficulties in their subjects.
Assistance may be provided on an individual or small
group basis, either within the classroom or in a
withdrawal situation. This support is provided for class
work, assignments and exams dependant upon students
needs.
This support group is well resourced and
takes a priority standing when yearly budgeting is performed.
Although it operates with a different client base to
Special Education there are strong links between both
groups within the school.
