The Arts

TSHS Performing Arts Department

Students at TSHS have many opportunities to be involved in performance groups such as instrumental and choral ensembles, drama presentations and the bi-annual musical production. It is well-acknowledged that the study of creative and performing arts stimulate the brain and further the ability to function academically. At TSHS, we encourage involvement in the Arts as part of our suite of academic and extra-curricular Gifted and Talented programs. We believe that students should foster their creative talents to their highest capacity.

MUSICAL

Our large-scale bi-annual musical production is a highlight amongst the students, staff and community alike. Previous musical successes include the 2004 production of Calamity Jane, the 2006 Aussie musical, Cruisin’, and most recently, our 2008 production of the famous Pirates of Penzance. Each musical involves more than 50 of our students, working with many staff and community volunteers to create an artistic and innovative production. Our next musical production will be in semester I, 2010. Stay tuned for more exciting details!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

The Instrumental Music program offers at TSHS every Friday with rehearsals and lessons operating before and during school. Instrumental Music is offered to students in the following areas:

  • Group Instrumental lessons (rotating roster on Fridays)
  • Concert Band (Friday: period 7 in term 1; alternating periods in later terms)
  • Stage Band (Friday rehearsal from 7.30am, involvement by invitation)

CHORAL MUSIC

Although new in the school in comparison to the Instrumental Music tradition, the Choral Music program is now a well-rounded facet of the Music Department, and offers students an opportunity to develop their vocal abilities in a variety of ways.

  • Senior Choir (years 9-12, Monday rehearsal 3-4.30pm, involvement by invitation)
  • Junior Choir (year 8, all welcome, lunchtime rehearsals on Thursdays)

DRAMA PRESENTATIONS

The Senior Drama Production is a bi-annual event which showcases the year 11/12 Drama class. It is a theatrical production which allows the senior students to develop and present an entertaining and educational performance. It is an essential part of their curriculum program.
